Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Take a Photo Using Selective Focus Mode in Camera App in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

Selective focus is one of shooting modes available in the Camera app in Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge that can be used to make a specific object in a photo you take with the rear camera be the centre of attention by applying the out of focus effect in the photo, in other words, your phone will focus on the selected object and blur the rest to make the object becomes stand out.

To get the best result when taking a photo with the selective focus mode, make sure to fill the following conditions:
  • Place the object you want to focus on between 10-50 cm from the phone.
  • Make sure the distance between the object you want to focus on and the background at least 3 times the distance between the object and your phone. As the example, if you place the object 30 cm from your phone, then the distance between your phone and the background at least 90 cm.
  • Avoid taking a photo with the background that cannot be distinguished from the object, such as plain-coloured walls or background with no pattern.
  • Make sure to take a photo in a well lit environment and no strong light behind the object so that the camera can easily distinguish between the object and the background.

How to take a photo using the selective focus mode in the Camera app?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open the Camera app. By default, it uses the rear camera with the auto mode.
  2. Tap Mode to view all available shooting modes and then tap Selective focus to enable this mode.
  3. Point the camera to the object.
  4. Tap the object near your phone to focus on it and then tap to take a photo.
Make sure to hold your phone as steady as possible while taking the photo with this shooting mode because your phone needs to take multiple photos to create a final photo with the out of focus effect.
  5. When your phone has been finished taking the photo, tap the preview thumbnail to view the photo in the Gallery app.
  6. Tap  to change the focus settings of the photo.
  7. Here, you're provided with the following options that you can select according to your need:
    • Near focus : select this option to make the object near the camera becomes stand out by applying the out of focus effect on the rest.
    • Far focus : select this option to make the object far away from the camera becomes stand out by applying the out of focus effect on the rest.
    • Pan focus : select this option to have your phone focuses on both the object near the camera and the object far away from the camera, in other words, selecting this option will remove the out of focus effect from the photo.
  8. If you're satisfied with the result and want to be able to edit or change the focus of this photo later, tap Save button. Or, you can save the changes as a different image by tapping Save as new button.
