Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Enable and Use Pop-Up Display Feature in Messages App in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has some features that are designed to help you quickly know when you receive new text messages so you won't miss any important ones, one of which is the pop-up display feature. When this feature is enabled, your phone will show new messages in pop-ups that stay on top for about 20 seconds while you're on any screen outside the Messages app, except for the lock screen, so you can easily know or read the message as soon as it arrives and then take the necessary actions, e.g., call the sender, quickly reply the message via pop-up, view the message in the Messages app to use other messaging features, etc.


How to enable or disable the pop-up display feature in the Messages app?
You can turn on or off this feature by using the following steps:
  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap More at the top right and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Notifications.
    If the notifications is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on. The switch turns when it's enabled.
  4. Tap the ON/OFF switch next to Pop-up display to enable or disable this option. When the switch turns means the pop-up display feature is enabled.


How to use the pop-up display feature?
Use the following steps as the example of using the pop-up display feature:
  1. When the preview message feature is disabled.
    When an incoming text message arrives while you're on any screen outside the Messages app, except for the lock screen, your phone will show a pop-up window to notify you about the message. If needed, you can do further actions with these steps:
    • Tap View to open the message in the Messages app.
    • Tap Close to close the pop-up.
  2. When the preview message feature is enabled.
    When an incoming text message arrives while you're on any screen outside the Messages app, except for the lock screen, your phone will show you the sender and a short preview of the received message in pop-up. If needed, you can do further actions by using these steps:
    • To read the whole message, scroll down the message in the pop-up. Or, you can tap View to read the message with more conveniently in the Messages app.
    • To reply the message, tap Reply button. Enter your message and then tap Send button.
    • To close the pop-up, tap Close button.

    When a text message arrives, your phone will display the sender and a short preview of the received message on the lock screen. If needed, you can take further actions with these steps:
    • Swipe down the message preview on the lock screen.
    • Tap Call to call the sender or tap Reply to reply the message in the Messages app.
      If you're using a screen lock type with secure lock settings, e.g., PIN, password, pattern, fingerprints, or direction lock, you need to perform your current screen lock method before the selected action can be done.
  2. When the screen is not locked and pop-up display feature is enabled.
    When a text message arrives while you're on any outside the Messages app, your phone will display the sender and a short preview of the received message in pop-ups. If needed, you can take further actions with these steps:
    • To read the whole message in pop-up, scroll down the message in the pop-up. Or, you can tap View to read the message with more conveniently in the Messages app.
    • To reply the message, tap Reply button. Enter your message and then tap Send button.
    • To close the pop-up, tap Close button.
  3. When the screen is not locked and pop-ups display feature is disabled.
    When a text message arrives, your phone will display the sender and a preview of the received message on the notification panel. If needed, you can take further actions with these steps:
    • Swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel.
    • Tap Call to call the sender or tap Reply to reply the message in the Messages app.

There are some conditions where you may need to set your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge to vibrate when receiving new text messages, as the example, when you're carrying your phone in your pocket while you're in a noisy environment where you may difficult to know the messages just by hearing the notification sound, or when you're in a place where you're prohibited to make any noise so feel the vibration can help you easily know when you have new text messages so you won't miss any important ones, etc.


How to enable vibration when receiving new text messages?
You can do so by using the following steps:

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap More at the top right and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Notifications.
    If notifications is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on.
  4. Slide the ON/OFF switch next to Vibrations to the right to enable it. The switch turns when it's enabled.
    FYI, this option won't be available when the sound profile in your phone is set to silent.
  5. Now, your phone will play a short pulse of vibration when receiving new text messages.

By default, your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge will play the default notification sound when receiving new text messages to help you easily know when you have new ones. When needed, you can change the message tone to the desired one if you're bored with the current one or if you don't want to miss any text message from your favourite contacts.


How to change the message tone?
As the example, we'll do so by using two different methods: from the Messages app and from the Contacts app.

Method #1: From the Messages app
You can use the following steps to change the notification sound when receiving text messages from all contacts except those who have been assigned to the different message tone:
  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap More at the top right and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Notifications.
    If Notifications is off, tap the ON/OFF switch to turn it on.
  4. Tap Notification sound.
  5. Select the required sound you want to use.
  6. The selected tone has been set as the message tone.


Method #2: From the Contacts app
You can use the following steps to assign the different tone for a specific contact so your phone will play the selected sound when receiving text messages from the selected contact:
  1. Open the Contacts app.
  2. Tap the required contact whose message tone you want to change.
  3. Tap Edit to edit the selected contact.
  4. Tap More to access more options available of the selected contact.
  5. Scroll the screen to the very bottom and then select Message tone.
  6. Select the required sound you want to assign for the selected contact.
  7. Tap the Back key to return to the previous screen.
  8. Tap Save button to save the changes.
  9. The selected sound has been set as the message tone for the selected contact.

When needed, you can do some customisations in the Messages app in your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, one of which is changing the background image within conversations to another preloaded image if you're bored with the current one or to your own image for more personal touch.


How to change background image within conversations in the Messages app?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap More at the top right and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Backgrounds.
  4. To use your own picture as the background image within conversations, do as follows:
    • Tap the thumbnail with at the bottom left corner of the screen.
    • Select the required image you want to use.
    • If needed, you can adjust the size of the selected picture you want to use as the background image by dragging the edge of the white frame . You can also use another part of the selected picture as the background image by dragging the white frame to the desired part.
    • Tap Done button to save the changes.
    • The selected image has been set as the background image within all conversations in the Messages app.
  5. To use other pre-loaded image as the background image within conversations, do as follows:
    • Swipe the bottom of the screen that displays the background image thumbnails to the left to view available pre-loaded images.
    • Tap the required thumbnail of a pre-loaded image you want to use. You'll get the preview when you tap each of them so you'll get an idea how it might look like when a background image is selected.
    • The selected image has been set as the background image within all conversations in the Messages app.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge: How to Manage and Use Quick Responses Feature in Messages App in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

Quick responses is a feature available in the Messages app in Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge that you can use to quickly respond unanswered calls or incoming text messages with the preset messages that you create in advance.


How to manage the quick responses feature in the Messages app?
You can do so by using the following steps:
  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap More at the top right and then select Settings.
  3. Tap Quick responses.
  4. To add a new quick response, enter the required message in the Enter message field and then tap . The message has been added to the quick responses list.
  5. To delete an existing quick response, tap next to the required message. The selected message has been deleted from the quick responses list.
  6. To edit an existing quick response, tap the required message and then make the required changes. Once done, tap Save button to save the changes.


How to use the quick responses feature in the Messages app?
As the example, we'll use this feature to quickly respond an unanswered call with a preset message by using the following steps:
  1. Swipe down the top of the screen to open up the notification panel and then tap Message in the missed call notification to reply it with message.
  2. In the conversation, tap More at the top right and then select Quick responses.
  3. Tap the required quick response you want to use in your message.
  4. Tap Send button to send the message.
